I hope everyone enjoyed their 10 days of “Between Rounds Break” and are all set to challenge themselves gently for the rest of the year.
Round 4 is often one of the more challenging Rounds of Words we hold. Not only must we deal with the baggage of previous failures (and successes! sometimes succeeding can add so much more pressure than failing) throughout the year, but the weather is changing, and the holidays are soon to arrive with all their inherit distractions and preoccupations.
In my opinion, these very issues make Round 4 the most important ROW80 one can participate in. it is in this round that I have to actively claim every free minute of writing time, where the press of others’ expectations regularly evict my muses from my brain. This is the round where (for me) seasonal depression hits as we face longer nights and alarm clocks breaking through natural hibernation rhythms in the Northern hemisphere. We even have NaNoWriMo (which many of us participate in) to call our energy away from the longterm goals of our writing lives.
All these things mean that Round 4 can be vital. More than any other round of words, Round 4 is where we find our truest pace and form. It’s where we find ourselves.
Hope to find you there!
